Company logo of Degussa
The Degussa star
The first trademark of the Deutsche Gold- und Silber-Scheideanstalt vormals Roessler (German Gold and Silver Separation Institute formerly Roessler), was registered at the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin on August 14, 1895. It did not yet have any direct symbolic character; instead it depicted an eight-pointed star in a circle, with an eagle and Frankfurt's coat of arms in the center. The letters DG & SSA and v R running over and under the eagle were an abbreviation of the company name. The logo, used everywhere as a four-colored seal and confidential mark and also as a brand stamp on wooden crates, was only replaced by a true Degussa logo in 1929. |

Sun and moon
In May 1929, Berlin designer Schulpig was commissioned to design a trademark for the Deutsche Gold- und Silber-Scheideanstalt, formals Roessler. He submitted a total of five designs to Degussa's executive board, none of which it liked. Despite this Schulpig received a further commission, this time with more detailed specifications: the design had to include gold scales, a balance or a sun and moon (the alchemist symbols for gold and silver). Schulpig designed a rhombus with a stylized sun and moon symbol. For the "Degussa" company name he chose Futura, at that time a new typeface.
In 1929 this trademark was registered in the German Commercial Register and it was also patented in 109 countries outside Germany.
The logo was slightly modified in 1973 and used until the merger between Degussa and Hüls in 1999. |
